Settings of the medication calculator

SmartFlow has a medication calculator. For the correct operation of the calculator, it is important that you know the functions of the settings of the calculator.

This table shows each setting of the calculator and its function:

RouteUse the Route box to select the applicable route of administration. You can select:

Note: You can also enter text in the Route box. For example, if you dispensed a medication for a patient to take home, you can enter Dispensed.

Dosage Use the Dosage box to enter the quantity of medication given to a patient at one time. Dosage has related settings that you can use to:
  • Select the unit of measurement for the active ingredient of the medication
  • Select the unit of measurement for the volume
The available units of measurement for the active ingredient of the medication are:
  • dose
  • drop
  • gm
  • IU
  • mcg
  • mEq
  • mg
  • ml
  • mmol
  • tab
  • units
  • µG
The available units of measurement for the volume are:
  • bag
  • cat
  • dog
  • dose
  • eye
  • kg
  • m2
  • pt
Note: If necessary, you can manually enter lbs to record the patient weight in pounds.

Tip: Set the units of measurement for Dosage and Concentration to the same value. Thus, it will not be necessary to change them each time you use the template.
Total doseUse the Total dose box to record the total quantity of the medication that you give to a patient in a period.No. Set a value for each patient.
Show on flowsheetUse the Show on flowsheet setting to configure the information that SmartFlow shows on the flowsheet. You can configure SmartFlow to show:
  • The dosage of the medication
  • The total dose of the medication in milligrams
  • The total dose of the medication in milliliters

Note: You can change the default value of Show on flowsheet in the general SmartFlow settings.
