About the medication calculator

SmartFlow has a medication calculator. SmartFlow automatically shows the medication calculator when you add a medication to a patient's flowsheet.

You can use the calculator to:
  • Calculate the dosage of a medication
  • Calculate the total volume of a medication in milliliters
  • Calculate the total volume of a medication in milligrams
Note: You cannot use the medication calculator if:
  • The unit of measurement of the concentration is different to the unit of measurement of the dosage
  • You did not record the weight of the patient

SmartFlow uses the patient weight to do the necessary calculations. As a result, SmartFlow does not automatically calculate the total dose and total volume of a medication. You must enter the necessary dosage each time you must add a medication to flowsheet.

Note: If you save a treatment template with a configured medication, and then add the treatment template to a different patient's flowsheet, SmartFlow uses the same calculations.
Note: A new SmartFlow site always has some treatment templates. Some of the treatment templates have medications. The dosage of the medications use examples from Plumb's. It is important that you change the dosages of the medications before you use the treatment templates.
