Medication treatment settings

After you add a medication treatment to a patient's flowsheet, SmartFlow shows treatment settings for the medication. Use the settings to record information about the medication and when to do the treatment.

This table shows each setting of a medication treatment and its function:

    Note: The patient's flowsheet only shows the total dose of a medication as ml/hr because flowsheets show treatments for each hour.

Note: You can enter text in the Route box. For example, if you dispensed a medication for a patient to take home, you can enter Dispensed.

Dosage Use Dosage to enter the quantity of medication. Dosage has related settings that you can use to:
  • Select the unit of measurement for the active ingredient of the medication
  • Select the unit of measurement for the volume

Tip: Set the units of measurement for Dosage to the same value as Concentration. As a result, it is not necessary to change them each time that you use a template that includes the medication.
The available units of measurement for the active ingredient of the medication are:
  • dose
  • drop
  • gm
  • IU
  • mcg
  • mEq
  • mg
  • ml
  • mmol
  • tab
  • units
  • µG
The available units of measurement for the volume are:
  • bag
  • cat
  • dog
  • dose
  • eye
  • kg
  • pt

To automatically calculate the total dose, SmartFlow can only use a unit of measurement of kilogram or pound for the volume. If you use a different unit of measurement, SmartFlow does not automatically calculate the total dose.

Note: To use pound as the unit of measurement, manually enter lbs
Note: m2 shows as a unit of measurement that you can select but it does not have a function. Thus, do not select m2.
Total doseTotal dose shows the total quantity of the medication that you give to a patient. After you enter dosage information, SmartFlow automatically calculates the total dose.
Note: If you know the total quantity that you want to give to a patient, you can enter the value in Total dose. As a result, SmartFlow automatically calculates the dosage.

Show on flowsheetUse Show on flowsheet to configure the information that SmartFlow shows in the flowsheet. The flowsheet can show:
  • The medication dosage
  • The total dose of the medication in milligrams
  • The total dose of the medication in milliliters
Note: Use the SmartFlow system settings to change the value of Show on flowsheet that SmartFlow uses automatically.
