Concentration of medications

If the concentration of a medication is measured with mg/ml, a practice manager must make a decision about how they configure the concentration of the medication. The equation that SmartFlow uses to calculate the dose of the medication changes as a result of the concentration of the medication.

When a practice manager configures a parameter for a medication, they can use the settings to configure the medication information. For example, they can configure:
  • The name of the medication
  • The concentration of the medication
  • The method that staff must use to complete the scheduled treatment tasks of the medication

This table shows the equation that the medication calculator uses to calculate the total volume of a medication:

Unit of measure of the total volume of a medicationEquation
Total volume (mg/kg) Dose rate (mg/kg) × body weight (kg) ÷ concentration (mg/ml)
Note: Staff can also use this method to show the total volume of the medication in milliliters.
Total volume (ml/mg)Dose rate (ml/kg) × body weight (kg)
Note: To use this equation, staff must calculate the dose rate before they use the medication calculator in SmartFlow.
A practice manager buys Lactulose. A medication parameter is necessary for Lactulose. The concentration of Lactulose is 667 mg /ml. The recommended dosage for Lactulose is 0.5 mg / kg.

The practice manager must make a decision about the unit of measurement that they want to use to prescribe the medication. If they want to calculate the total volume of Lactulose as milligrams, they must set the concentration of the medication as 667 mg/ml. If they want to calculate the total volume of milligrams as millilitres, they must set the concentration of the medication as 1 ml/ml.
