SmartFlow system requirements

The SmartFlow system requirements give information about the minimum and recommended technology for you to get the best results with SmartFlow.

SmartFlow operates best when you use these devices:
  • iPads for treatment work
  • Computers for system configuration, whiteboard work, and some treatment work
  • TVs for whiteboard displays
Note: For best results, use the recommended devices and specifications. If you do not use the recommended devices and recommended specifications, SmartFlow can have worse performance.

iPads

iPads are necessary for work with:
  • Flowsheets
  • Anesthetic sheets
  • Dental charts
  • Forms
Note: You cannot use the SmartFlow iPad app with Android or Windows devices.

This table shows which iPads you can use to operate SmartFlow:

Whiteboards

Practices usually use TVs or desktop computers to show their whiteboards.

This table shows the minimum recommended specifications for devices that show whiteboards:

PartInformation
CPUIntel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5
RAM8 GB
SSDNot applicable
Display22 inch Full HD (1920 × 1080)
Operating systemThe newest versions of Windows or macOS
Web browserGoogle Chrome
SmartFlow has an iPad application that you can use in a Chrome web browser on many types of devices. For example, you can use the iPad application in a Chrome web browser with a:
  • Laptop computer
  • Desktop computer
  • Television
Tip: Organizations frequently use televisions as whiteboards in each treatment area.

Network connection

A stable network connection is necessary for best SmartFlow performance.

This table shows the recommended download and upload speeds for practices with different quantities of devices:

Number of devicesRecommended downloadRecommended upload
1–5 devices25–50+ Mbps10+ Mbps
6–15 devices100+ Mbps20+ Mbps
15+ devices300+ Mbps (fiber preferred)50+ Mbps
Note: Use a website (for example, www.speedtest.net) to do a test of your intenet connection speed.
Each of these parts of connectivity infrastructure can cause problems with SmartFlow performance:
  • Cloud provider
  • Your internet service provider
  • On-site router or firewall
  • Internal wired network
  • Wireless access points
  • Device configuration (for example, your device's operating system)

To prevent connection problems, IDEXX customer support recommends that you have a second internet service provider, or a mobile data connection.

Latency (Ping)

A minimum latency of 40 ms is necessary for best SmartFlow performance.

Important: If latency is 150 ms or longer, there is a higher risk of errors.

IDEXX customer support recommends that you use an app to do latency tests (for example, Ubiquiti Wifiman) at different locations in your practice.
