Zero Fluid Rate

The Zero Fluid Rate feature decreases the risk of an incorrect fluid rate when you schedule fluid treatment for a patient.

If a practice manager activated the Zero Fluid Rate feature and you schedule fluid treatment for a patient, SmartFlow does not automatically calculate the treatment's fluid rate. As a result, it is necessary to set the fluid rate manually. Thus, the risk of an incorrect rate is smaller. If a practice manager did not activate the Zero Fluid Rate feature, SmartFlow calculates the fluid rate automatically.

Note: If you use a template to schedule many treatments, you must set the fluid rate for each fluid treatment manually. If a fluid treatment includes an additive, the additive will not show on flowsheets until the treatment has a fluid rate.

This image shows settings of a fluid treatment. The Hourly fluid rate box shows 0.00 because SmartFlow did not calculate the fluid rate for the treatment.

Methods to set the fluid rate for a fluid treatment

SmartFlow has two methods that you can use to set the rate for a fluid treatment. This table gives each method and its related procedure to set the fluid rate:

MethodProcedure
Manually calculate the fluid rate.Enter the fluid rate in the Hourly fluid rate box.
Use SmartFlow to calculate the fluid rate automatically.
  1. Make sure that SmartFlow has the patient's weight.
  2. Enter a maintenance rate.
  3. If necessary, set dehydration settings.
  4. Select a multiplier.

SmartFlow automatically calculates the fluid rate and enters it in the Hourly fluid rate box.

Note: If you change a patient's weight after you set a fluid rate, SmartFlow changes the Hourly fluid rate setting back to 0. Thus, it is necessary to manually set a new fluid rate.
